2OO9 saw Waveney Gymnastics Club host two international training camps prior to the World Gymnastics Championship in London during September and October.
Following intense international promotions, Waveney Gymnastics Club were delighted to host training camps prior to the World Championships for both the Canadian Men’s Artistic and British Men’s Artistic Teams in September and October 2009.
These teams included amongst their numbers the British gymnasts Louis Smith who won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics and Daniel Keatings who took the silver medal in the All Round Competition at the World Championships in London, and gymnasts from Canada who had competed at the Beijing Olympics in 2008!
Centre Manager Vikki Rogers said ‘We are thrilled to welcome teams of such a high calibre to visit us and hope that they will provide an inspiration for everyone connected to the club and the local community’.
The camps were incredibly successful for the teams involved, all of those connected to the club and many members of the local community who came to watch their training sessions.
The Canadian coaches described the facility as one of the best in the world, at which they had trained, and praised the welcome and hospitality they had received from Waveney. A visit from the BBC to broadcast live from the club as they trained, proved to be one of the highlights of their stay.
This summer has also seen the return of the British Gymnastics Men’s Elite U-14 Squad to Waveney to hold their summer training camp, following the success of their first visit to the centre in 2008.
Visiting for the first time also in August was the Scottish National Women’s Team who enjoyed a week long training camp at Waveney. Sandy Richardson National Coach for the Scottish Squad said ‘An excellent venue and great support from the club made it easy for us to have a successful pre-season training camp‘.
A delegation from the Japanese Institute of Sports Science have also visited the club recently to view the facilities and assess their suitability as a training camp for the Japanese gymnastics and trampolining squads as a Pre London 2012 Training Camp.
The club are optimistic that following these successful visits the teams will be returning to Waveney in the not so distant future!
